NEW BREAD PRICE
Only Subsidies Covered BAKERS' CLAIMS STILL PENDING , PA WELLINGTON. May 8. The new prices for bread take account only of subsidies and not-of the increase which for a long time has been sought by the master bakers. The president of the Wellington Master Bakers’ Association, Mr Bell, said today that bakers still needed and maintained their request to the Government for a further increase to cover present-day costs. The subsidy of £l2 a ton on flour had now been removed, and although bakers had hoped that a settlement of their claim would be included in the present adjustment, it had not been. The increase at the rate of 2d on a 21b loaf now allowed would only meet the £l2 a ton increase in the price of flour. Mr Bell said that all bakers of smallgoods other than small cakes and pies were now free of price control and these had immediately been increased in price because of the extra cost of flour, butter and milk. Application would no doubt be made for authority to make the necessary increase in the price of small cakes and pies. Decontrol of these items was sought. The new prices, effective today, for smallgoods were up by 2d to 3d a dozen on previous rates.
