DEAN OF CANTERBURY

Sincere But Mistaken ARCHBISHOP’S OPINION PA AUCKLAND, May 7. The Dean of Canterbury, Dr Hewlett Johnson, was quite sincere in his outlook but was mistaken in his view of the attitude of the Soviet leaders, said the Most Reverend R. C. Halse, Archbishop of Brisbane, in an interview today. “The dean thinks that the Soviet leaders want peace, but I think that they want it so long as they can gain what they want by peaceful means,” said Archbishop Halse. “I did not ban the dean from my diocese when he visited Brisbane, as has been stated in some reports,” said Archbishop Halse. “The question of his making an address from the pulpit did not arise as he was not in the diocese on Sunday. My attitude was that I would not have objected to his peraching the Gospel of God had he wanted to do so.

Archbishop Halse, who will be in New Zealand for about a fortnight, will attend the Centennial Church Congress in Christchurch, which begins on May 16.
