BATTLE FOR CHUSANS
Opening Artillery Duels Reported NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. HONGKONG, May 7. The Nationalist News Agency today reported artillery duels in the region of the Chusan Islands, which it added may mark the beginning of the expected Communist attack on these strategic islands. The agency said artillery fire was clearly heard in Tinghai, the chief town of the Chusans. Nationalist planes later attacked more than 100 Communist craft which were seen moving toward Communist-held Kintang Island, west of Tinghai. British Casualty In Malaya NZPA—Reuter—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. SINGAPORE, May 6. One British police officer died as the result of wounds when a jungle squad operating in the Kulim area of Kedah engaged bandits. One bandit was killed.
