WOMEN’S GAMES

University A Wins Knock-out The default of the Training College teams, owing to vacations, left only two teams to contest the final of the Senior A Grade knock-out competition. Playing under good conditions on the Oval, with the grounds recently rolled and cut, University A and Kings A turned on a fast and clever game with the result in doubt until the final whistle. The University forwards showed better combination and just swayed the balance. In the Senior B Grade, Momona B has an unbeaten record. Results in Senior A Grade:— University A 1, Kings A nil. Momona A 4, Kings B 2. Otago A 1, University B 1. Taieri, a bye. CLOSE GAME Neither team was at full strength in the main match on Oval No. 1 between University A and Kings. The standard of piav, however, was very high throughout the game. The University team appeared to be slow in settling down to its reorganised combination and Kings pressed strongly. M. Barnes, in goal for University, was conspicuous in the early stages in' making some spectacular saves. After settling down, the University team made some determined attacks, but play was on the whole- very evenly distributed. After 27 minutes’ play M. Norris followed up cleverly and scored the only goal of the match. In the second half Kings ) again took the initiative to begin with, but faded later on and the final whistle came with University pressing strongly. For the winners N. Sagers at full-back was outstanding, whilst M. Barnes in goal enhanced her reputation as a courageous defender with a powerful clearing kick. N. Gourley was in her former position on tire left wing and made some determined runs. K. McNaught, on the other wing, was also impressive. For Kings, P. Hendry played her characteristic sound and nonchalant game at full-back; N. Kelliher was very good as goalkeeper, whilst D. Wood was the best of the forwards, being ably supported by E. Brownlie. The umpires were Miss T. Sew Hoy and- Mr W. McLeod. GOOD RECOVERY Although playing one short, Kings B put up a very meritorious resistance against Momona and were leading by two goals to nil at half time. The Kings team showed much speed in the forward line and were ably served by Eunice McGregor on the right wing. Good combination between this player, D. Budd and A. McGregor gave Kings an initial advantage. H. Logie was sound on defence. In the first half the Momona team appeared to be disorganised and even the most promising attacks were ruined by forwards and half-backs getting in one another’s way in the circle. The first score for Kings came when Elaine McGregor shot at goal from the edge of the circle and the defenders . mishit. Kings second goal was the best of the match, Eunice McGregor sending in a perfect centre from the right wing and A. McGregor found the net with a first time shot. In the second half Momona improved and sustained a determined attack. Goals were scored by C. Middleton (2), J. Ashby and J. Devlin. The umpires were Miss T. Sew Hoy and Mr M. A. Kilpatrick. OTAGO PRESSED The University B team was much weakened by absences due to the vacation and fielded a number of players who had already played in a previous game, but the team offered strong resistance. H. Black, in goal, appears to be regaining the form which gave her New Zealand honours in 1948 and showed her great sense of anticipation to full advantage. Other prominent players were V. Ellis at centre-forward, M. Ferens and J. Sonntag. For Otago the best players were I. Erridge, A. Simmers and S. Stewart. The only score in the first half was from a penalty bully when V. Ellis scored following an infringement by the Otago goalkeeper. In the second half the University players tired towards the end and J. Smallman equalised. The umpires were Mrs E. Sonntag and Mr M. A. Kilpatrick.
