PRESBYTERY OF CENTRAL OTAGO

The Central Otago Presbytery met at St. Enoch’s Church, Alexandra, last Thursday, the moderator, the Rev. D. D. Heggie, Pr Mr d Heggie welcomed to the meeting the Rev. J. S. Murray, foreign missions secretary of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, who \vas one time minister at Queenstown, and had been moderator of the presbytery. Later Mr Murray addressed a combined gathering of presbytery and PA members. The Rev R- R. Welsh, convener ot the presbytery's life and work committee reported plans for the annual retreat and conference of the presbytery, to be held at Roxburgh from May 8 to 11, with Principal J. A. Allan, of Dunedin, as the speaker. Presbytery confirmed the arrangements made bv the committee. A report of youth activities was presented bv the Rev. A. M. Kirkwood, youth committee convener. Mr Kirkwood reported that a financial loss had been made at the Bible class camp at Easter, owing to the smaller number attending. There were fifty campers, he said, under the guidance of the Rev. J. A. Thomson, of Invercargill. The theme of camp studies was “ The Lordship of Christ.” Plans for the presbytery s share in the New Life Movement were submitted by the Rev. G. Dallard. The movement, he said, was a call to practical repentence. to review the effectiveness of Christian work to see what more could be done, and to set to work to implement those larger tasks. The Church, he said, in spite of its freauent ineffectiveness, possessed the answer to human need, and was faced with the task of making that answer known through its witness. The Rev. I. B. Wilson reported that the needs of the Queenstown outstations had altered, and that the church building now at Miller’s Flat would serve a more useful purpose at Soeagrass Flat. After consideration, presbytery gave authority to remove the church building to Speargrass Flat, provided a suitable section could be obtained.
