TOTAL MUCH HIGHER

Prisoners Still Held In Russia Rec. 0.15 a.m. BERLIN, May 5. More than 400,000 prisoners of war are still held by the Russians in spite of the Moscow announcement that all but a few thousand have been repatriated. said a spokesman for the West German Bureau of War Prisoners’ Affairs in Frankfurt today. He said the figure of 400,000 took into account only those known to be prisoners. It was believed that the actual total may be much higher. He added that relatives and returned prisoners had accounted for 300,000 Germans still held by the Russians and another 100,000 had written brief messages to their families. Many of Germany’s best-known scientific and technical minds had apparently been condemned to spend the rest of their lives in Russian factories, prison camps, mines, and laboratories. The spokesman presumed that those still held were working in plants producing war materials or on strategic road. rail, and other construction projects.
