THE SOUTH ISLAND

Reduced Demand On Wednesday

PA CHRISTCHURCH, Apl. 5. For the first time since the restrictions were introduced, the South Island power . demand yesterday fell below the quota. A difference of a mere 9404 units was enough to do the trick, the saving being 0.04 per cent, under the required consumption. This was the same as for tht corresponding day last year. f Announcing these Jfgures, the district engineer of the State HydroElectric Department, Mr W. H. Gregory, said it was encouraging to see that consumers had answered the appeals for savings. He urged c<?ntinued efforts, saying that the position was still serious.

Mr Gregory mentioned two things which could upset the record—a cold snap, which could send the demand soaring, and a freeze-up, which would not only raise the demand, but cut the already depleted flow of water into the storage lakes. .
