ABATTOIR SYSTEM

Modernisation Policy PA AUCKLAND, Apl. 5.

The Master Butchers’ Federation will meet the New Zealand Municipal Association in Wellington on May 2 to discuss ways to modernise the Dominion’s abattoir system. A definite policy for the future of the abattoirs will be worked out and placed before the Government. The federation's president, Mr J. W. Perry, told the annual conference of the Municipal Association last month that many abattoirs were in a dilapidated state. The system in general was outmoded and inefficient, and was fighting a losing battle against the freezing companies. In many cases only slaughter house facilities were provided, which was all that was required under the Meat Act. Mr Perry advocated the processing of by-products by abattoirs.
