CHECK TO SPEEDING
Use Of Micro-wave Device SUPPORT FROM DRIVERS PA WELLINGTON, Apl. 4. “The Transport Department has the wholehearted support of the New Zealand Drivers’ Federation in its attempt to stop speeding by heavy vehicles,” said tne secretary of the federation, Mr A. C. Melville. He had been invited to comment on the recent criticism of the use by the department of the micro-wave speed indicator. The indicator was inspected by representatives of the federation before it was used by traffic inspectors, and these representatives agreed that it was a fair and accurate means of checking speeding, said Mr Melville. “As the indicator cannot be faultedin its checking of speeds, the question of when a ticket for speeding is issued to the driver concerned is of no consequence,” Mr Melville said. ‘ Every driver is or should be aware of the speed limits. This is certainly true of members of the federation, who have been repeatedly urged to go-operate in their observance." , , , , Mr Melville added that the federation had consistently followed this policy On the New Zealand Road Safety Council, where it had opposed any attempt to raise the speed limits.
