BRAGDEN IMPRESSES
SET FOR BEST HURDLE COMPANY
DISAPPOINTMENT ON FLAT Bragden was having only his second start over hurdles when he was successful in the Allanton Hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday. On the first day of the meeting he was always towards the rear in the Taieri Hurdles, and he finished well behind the leaders after jumping impressively throughout. On Saturday he turned for home on terms with his stablemate, Sea Power, a winner on the first day, and he won easily from The Denbigh, who was under pressure a long way from home. The race was run at a fast pace, and Bragden’s time was 1 3-ssec outside Gamble’s course record. Bragden showed more than average ability on the flat, although he did not race with much luck. His only success this season w r as in the Otaio Plate at the New Zealand Cup meeting, when he beat Sweet Lorraine. He also recorded two placings about that time. He is an out-and-out stayer and his pace on the flat should carry him on to the best hurdle company this winter. Bragden is a five-year-old gelding by Salmagundi from Sally Sage, by Philamor from the Solferino mare Insolence. Sally Sage is also the dam of good performers in All Alone (by Salmagundi), Spice (by Lo Zingaro), and the promising two-year-old filly Purple Sage (by Royal Chief). Bragden and Purple Sage are trained at Invercargill by R. E. McLellan, while A. E. Dldham has Spice and All Alone. Philamor is the sire of several useful jumpers, and he is the sire of the dams of winners in Hobgoblin, Don’t listen, Lady Philway, St. Bruno, Robin Redbreast, Listen In and others.
