LITTLE ACTIVITY

CROMWELL CANDIDATES GALLOPED FLYING TRIXIE LOOKS WELL There was little activity at Wingatui yesterday morning, most of the horses raced on the final day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting being restricted to easy tasks, while a number of them have been put in the paddock for a day or two to freshen up again. A few horses, who will race at the Cromwell meeting, were given more serious tasks and among those to impress were Hoop-la, Buttons and Bows and Flying Trixie. After taking 38 2-ssec for the first three furlongs, Hoop-la finished in front of Whakawhatea at the end of seven furlongs on the outside of the course proper in lmin 35sec. Hoop-la has taken no harm from his fall in the Allanton Hurdles on Saturday. Detract was going better than Brockie at the end of a quiet six furlongs in lmin 22sec, the last half in 55 3-ssec. Detract strips in great order. Flying Trixie was running on at the end of five furlongs in lmin 7 4-ssec. She went away quietly from the mile and a-quarter post and came home well, her last half requiring 54 2-ssec. She should hold her own at Cromwell. Royal Heather and Man o' Kent, a recent addition to F. Shaw’s team, were together at the end of half a mile on the sand in 52sec, the first furlong in 12 3-ssec. Man o’ Kent is owned by Mr D. M. Wilson, of Mataura. and is a three-year-old gelding by Irish Lancer from Lady Winton. , _ Faites vos Jeux was in front of Buttons and Bows, who had covered a lot of extra ground, and Way Home, with Black Tartan four lengths back at the end of half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Faites vos Jeux should not be long before he shows his best. He is engaged at Cromwell. Vain Lad went over half a mile on his own in 56sec. All Alone and Spice were together at the end of half a mile in 56 l-ssec. Bonnv Royal and Sylvan, two members of C. G. Humphries’s team at Riccarton and owned by Mr H. W. S. Faulks, remained at Wingatui after the Dunedin meeting and they will go to Cromwell, after which they will probably be turned out. They are in the care of H. Ford. Both were exercised yesterday and are in good order, although Bonny Royal appears a bit on the big side. J. W. Pankhurst left on Monday night for Trentham with Gold King and Kosher, while Relampago and Dinnyhazer were taken north by the hurdle horseman, B. R. Thomson. , A recent addition to Pankhurst s team is Spare Part, the 1948 Wellington Cup winner, who is under treatment for a bowed tendon. He is very burly and it looks doubtful whether he will stand up to much hard work. Pankhurst. however, has patched up a number of horses and if he can fix Spare Part he should win Saiior Bov Will probably be taken to Trentham for the hurdles on the final day of the meeting and he will go from there to Palmerston North for the Manawatu meeting on March 25 and April 1. A number of Wingatui trainers are making preparations for racing their teams at Easter and it is likely that the centre will be represented from Ellerslie to Riverton. There is a large number of jumpers in work and they look as though thev will have a successful winter. The first Wingatui horses for Cromwell will leave today, but the majority will not leave until early on Friday morning.
