SWEET SPRAY AT TRENTHAM BEAUMARIS IN GOOD ORDER Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. Sweet Spray this morning did the most brilliant mile trial seen at Trentham for many years when she recorded lmin 40 l-ssec. Ridden by N. Eastwood, she carried only about 6st, but she was eased slightly over the final furlong. Wellington Cup candidates who pleased by the manner in which they completed their tasks were Beaumaris, Wonder Boy and Tenor Royal. Abbotsford was seen to advantage over seven furlongs, and Level Best and Pastel returned fast times for five furlongs. Correspond attracted attention by an effortless gallop over half a mile.

On the trial grass Sweet Spray completed a mile in lmin 40 l-ssec. She ran the- last seven furlongs in lmin 26 2-ssec, the last six in lmin 14 2-ssec, the last four in 50 l-ssec, and the final three in 37 4-ssec. Sweet Spray is to contest the Gloaming and Trentham Stakes on the later days of the meeting. Beaumaris, Wonder Boy and Chung Chong were associated over a mile and a-quarter, running the last mile in lmin 45 2-ssec. Beaumaris and Wonder Boy were on terms throughout and finished together two lengths ahead of Chung Chong. The last six furlongs were run in lmin 18 2-ssec, and the final three in 37 2-ssec. Beaumaris has come through a solid preparation and he will be one of the fittest horses in the Cup. Wonder Boy has done well since being at Trentham and he was travelling as well as Beaumaris.

The best fire furlongs was recorded by Pastel, when she left the distance behind in lmin 2 4-ssec. She came home from the half mile in 49 4-ssec. Level Best pleased when she ran five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the final three in 37sec.

Correspond led her stable-mate. Earldom, throughout half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and was three lengths clear passing the post. Fortune was not asked for her best while running half a mile in 53 l-ssec. She should have prospects in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Count Bian and Lord Latour were together at the end of a mile in lmin 49 l-ssec. Count Bian has been racing consistently this season, and he will be well supported on Saturday. Vigilantia pleased by the manner- in which he completed seven furlongs. He Is very fit for engagements on the later days of the meeting.

Impulsive showed speed to run three furlongs in 36.4-ssec. Calibrate could have improved on 52 2-ssec for half a mile. He is to contest the principal handicaps on the second and third days of the meeting. Renowned and Distinction were together throughout a mile in lmin 47sec. the last seven furlongs in lmin 33 4-ssec. Renowned did not finish as strongly as she has done lately. Distinction is not a definite starter tn the Wellington Cup. On the plough, Pierre galloped freely to leave seven furlongs behind in lmin 33 3-ssec. He worked easily in the early stages, but came home from the halfmile in 51sec.

Tenor Royal impressed when he shaded Royal Tan, with four lengths to Conclusion. after running seven furlongs in lmin 31 3-ssec. Tenor Royal has never looked better, and he may be capable of an upset in the Cup Royal Tan looks improved by his race at Woodville on Saturday. Conclusion moved scratchily, and was sore when he pulled up.
