AUCKLAND WINS

TAURANGA CLASS YACHTING OTAGO IN THIRD PLACE PA NELSON. Jan. 17. The Auckland representative, Vanity. (D. Townson), won the New Zealand Inter-provincial Tauranga Class Sailing Championship, which carries the Tanner Cup. The Nelson representative, MC (J. West), was runner-up. Auckland secured two firsts and two seconds in the series of five races, and in one race finished first, but was disqualified for fouling another boat. Nelson and Auckland had a hard battle for the championship in this afternoon’s race, which was sailed over four laps of a windward and leeward course, a distance of about four miles Nelson started well and established a lead of 55 seconds in the run to the first mark. Auckland gradually gained ground and took the lead at the leeward mark on the third lap, holding a small advantage until the finish, when it crossed the line four seconds ahead of Nelson. The final' championship points were* —Auckland 341.67, Nelson 274.99, Otago 265.47, Marlborough 240.24, Canterbury 189.43, Wellington 174.99, Hawke’s Bay 165.23 Poverty Bay 148.56, West Coast 108.33. The final race was started at 2.45 p.m. Finishing times were:—Auckland 4.7.8. Nelson 4.7.12, Wellington 4.7.40, Otago 4.8.8, Hawke’s Bay 4.8.49, Marlborough 4.9.9, Poverty Bay 4.9.12, Canterbury 4.9.28. West Coast did not start. •
