Faking Of Examination Results At The Rome University Alleged
NZPA—Copyright Rec. 7.15 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 17. The Rome correspondent of The Times says the Public Prosecutor yesterday demanded the trial of 116 students and employees of the Rome University on a charge of faking examination results. According to the 334-page indictment, the scandal dates back to Fascist days and was first discovered early in 1944. Many students, it is alleged, obtained degrees with the complicity of members of the secretarial staff of the university after passing only a few examinations or without even sitting for the examinations.
Five years of careful investigation has shown that the faking of the records had been going on for years. The trial of the accused is expected to open in May. A similar scandal was reported recently at Padua University, where the forging of examination results was stated to have been practised for 15 years.
