HISTORIC LODGE SAVED

MAJOR OUTBREAK OF FIRE PA AUCKLAND. Dec. 29. Holiday-makers saved the historic Whatipu Lodge at North Manukau from probable destruction by fire which started in the laundry. The flames were 30ft high before guests from the breakfast table could organ- / ise a bucket brigade on the roof, passing water from the tank. This, however, was insufficient to control the , fire and 22 picnickers arrived opportunely from Swanson and organised another bucket brigade from the j Whatipu Stream, while others demo- j lished the laundry wall to make a' firebreak. The laundry and two bathrooms were destroyed, but four buildings were saved. f Whatipu Lodge, once a shipping sig-; nal station, is owned by the Auckland Harbour Board and is leased as a tourist house. Insurances are £SOO onthe buildings and £ISOO on the contents. 1
