“THE ARTIST REGRETS”

The Royal Art Society invited M. Pierre Raighasse, of Noumea, to exhibt his paintings in Sydney* says a Sydney Morning Herald columnist. The artist was delighted—until he looked into things. Then he found that he would have to pay the French Administration 15 per cent, of the value of his pictures to get them out of Noumea. He would have to pay the Australian Government 20 per cent, to get them in, and a further 20 per cent, tax on all pictures he sold. To that had to be added 20 per cent, commission on sales and 15 per cent, general expenses. M. Raighasse totted it up and found it came to 90 per cent, of all possible proceeds. So he wrote to the society and said’ I most sincerely regret . .
