BOOKMAKING OFFENCES
SHARP FINES IMPOSED PA INVERCARGILL, Dec. 29. Bookmaking activities brought heavy fines to Stafford James Healey and James Arnold Wesney in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr W. A. Hal-low. S.M. Healey, a freezing works chamber hand, was fined £9O for carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and Wesney was fined £3O for aiding and abetting the offence of bookmaking. Both pleaded guilty. Wesney accepted £5 a day for allowing Healey to use his telephone.
The Railways Department advertises in this issue particulars of special trains and cheap fares from Dunedin to the races at Oamaru and Waikouaiti.
