NIGHT OWL SOUND STAYER

SPORTING

Consistent Form At Wingatui Meeting FURTHER SUCCESSES LIKELY As a four-year-old last season, Night Owl built up a remarkably eonsistent record of five wins and 12 minor placings in 21 starts, but did not get a reward in keeping with such consistency, his winnings amounting to £922 15s. This season he has been started 10 times for two wins and three minor placings and has collected £1670 in stakes. At the Grand National meeting in August Night Owl showed promise of a good season by running second to Western Front in the Islington Handicap, and on the first day of the Dunedin spring meeting he reversed the tables on Western Front by beating him in the Ranfurly Handicap. On the second day at Wingatui he went another good race to finish second to Speedy in the Grandstand Handicap. The Nightly gelding had had three unplaced starts prior to being brought down for the Dunedin Cup meeting, but he was saddled up in fine condition and was one of the leaders throughout the running of his two races—the Dunedin Cup, in which he was third, and the Jockey Club Handicap, which he won narrowly but well from Western Front. Night Owl is from Owl’s Nest, who was bred by Sir Charles Clifford and is by Polazel from Owlscombe, by Autumnus from Glenowlet, by Clanranald from Madowla, by Trenton from Azalea, by Galliard. A five-year-old, Night Owl is a sound stayer and further successes should come his way in the present season.
