•• Birds,” Warepa.—Communicate with Professor Marples, Zoology Department, Otago Museum, Dunedin. “ Lottery,” Tapanui—A Press Association message from Wellington dated December 22, and published in the Daily Times on Friday last, states: " The selling or purchase in New Zealand of tickets in overseas lotteries is not illegal provided the lottery itself is being legally conducted in the country of origin. This is an official opinion given today. The authority consulted stated that when Parliament was Considering the Gaming Bill no provision was made in it to deal with overseas lotteries, and the word “illegal” was deliberately inserted in Section 22 before the word lottery to make it clear that this section would not apply to overseas lotteries. The authority pointed out that it was well known that for years hundreds of tobacconists and others had given New Zealanders facUities for purchasing Tattersall’s and other lottery tickets, and it had been decided by the Full Court in 1935 that agents of that type were not agents for the promoters but that they were buying agents for the purchasers. Therefore, no offence was committed by the agents or by the purchasers acquiring these tickets.”

For the purpose of an aerodrome, the Governor-General has issued a proclamation taking the leasehold estate of land in the Papakairo survey district. The proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, which is signed by the Minister of Works, Mr Goosman, is to take effect on December 29, 1949.
