TRANSPORT UNIONISM
Sir,—The following from the Melbourne News Weekly, dated November 30, may be of interest: " Red Defeat in South Australian Tramways Union. The annual elections of thd Tramway Union have resulted in an increased moderate control and the defeat of known Communists. A moderate, Les. Johns, was appointed secretary, defeating the president, Comrade J. Flanigan, who resigned the presidency to contest the secretaryship. The moderate win in this election will give added strength to sound Federal control.” —I am, etc.. Industrial Peace. DUNEDIN’S CABLE CARS
Sir,—As a visitor to your city I have had three rides on your cable cars. On the first occasion I was told they were the only cable cars in the world, and on the second, that they went up the steepest grade in the world! It might interest Dunedin residents to know that In Hongkong the cable cars go up a very much steeper grade. On my third ride the same story was repeated to me in a great outburst of civic pride, so, under the circumstances, perhaps you would find space for this letter in your columns. Nobody would deny that the Dunedin people are friendly, anyway!—l am, etc.. Facts First.
