SCHOOL OF WHALES
SIGHTED IN HAURAKI GULF PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. Six whales have been sighted off Tiritiri Island, Hauraki Gulf, in the last few days by the lighthouse keeper on the island, apparently disporting themselves on the submerged shelf to the north and east of the island. The whales, which are about a quarter of a mile from the island, could be seen and heard clearly. They appeared to be about 30 feet long. These are the first whales the keeper had seen during his three years on the island. * Dr Gilbert Arcbey, curator of the Auckland Museum, said the whales were likely to be either blackfish or bottle nosed whales. They were hot dangerous unless interefered with. They are seen very infrequently so near Auckland. Three years ago several blackfish were stranded on the beach at Whangarei and died.
