GOOD RESPONSE
APPEAL FOR WATERFRONT LABOUR PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 28.
In response to an appeal for nonunion labour to replace the watersiders at present taking their annual holidays, between 600 and 650 men, mostly inexperienced but willing, offered themselves for employment on the Auckland wharves today. By afternoon, all but one of the ships in port which requisitioned for labour had had its requirements met, .although some of them were not working fully because of the shortage of experienced winchmen and hatchmen.
Shipping officials, who were worried about the large number of unionists away on holidays, were generally pleased with today’s response to their appeal
