SPECIAL CADET CAMP

POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLBOYS DEMONSTRATIONS AND SIGHTSEEING As a reward for their service in the New Zealand Cadet Corps, approximately 90 post-primary schoolboys, selected from the Cadet Corps roll of more than 25,500, will spend 11 days on a special course in Waiouru Military Camp next month. The boys will come from most of the post-primary schools which have a cadet unit and all will be returning to school next year, most of them as their school’s regimental sergeant-major or senior Under Officer. In accordance with a recommendation of the Committee on School Cadet Training appointed by the former Min_ ister of Defence, Mr Jones, in September, 1948, it is proposed that a similar course should be held for senior cadets in January every year. It is hoped that, apart from being a reward for service, the course will ensure that senior cadets are trained on common lines and to the highest standards; that it will give them a fuller understanding of the army in New Zealand; and that it will assist them to take an increasing share of the responsibility for the- training in their units. The cadets wll assemble at Waiouru on January 18, and for the first seven days will spend a substantial part of their time listening to lectures by regular force officers and seeing some of the army’s many instructional films. Three-quarters of an hour will be spent each afternoon on organised sport or physical training and half a day in the middle of the course will be given over to a sports meeting. The syllabus for the first part of the course will also include some drill and weapon training and a tactical exercise.

One of the last five days will be taken up with a rifle shooting competition and another with visits to the army’s school of artillery, where the cadets will see a demonstration shoot and to the armoured school, where they will see a demonstration by a troop of tanks on the move. The cadets will spend the last three days of the course camping on the shores of Lake Taupo. One of the objects of this part of the course is to give the cadets practical experience in erecting and conducting a canvas camp, but there will also be time for some sight-seeing. Visits to the Huka Falls, the Aritiatia Rapids and to Wairakei are planned.

The course commandant will be Major D. A. Caughley, director of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps, and the adjutant will be Captain D. M. Sweeney, GSO 111 Cadets, Army Headquarters. Six officers serving with the Cadet Corps have been selected for the course staff.

The cadets attending from the Southern Military District will be: Sergeant W. H. McLeod, Nelson College; Sergeant L. I. L. Forrest, Marlborough College; Sergeant R. Bloomfield, Motueka District High School; Sergeant R. Thompson, Greymouth Technical High School; Sergeant L. M. Brown, Hokitika District High School; Corporal T.
