The Australians today fought back to a sound position in the first test match against South Africa by carrying their total to 413 from their score of i 190 for four wickets on the opening day. South Africa started shakily, and wa9 70 for four wickets at stumps. The wicket had dried well when play was resumed today and was fairly hard. Hassett (109) and Loxton (16) resumed for Australia. The South African captain, Nourse. used the medium-pace bowler, Watkins, . the fast bowler, McCarthy, and the leftarm spinner,' Mann, in quick succession. His tactics proved successful when Watkins took Hassett’s leg stump with a fine inswinger in his second over. Hassett, who had added three singles quietly in 15 minutes, had steadied a wobbling innings, with his 112 (with seven 4’s) made in 263 minutes.
