Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race
NZPA—Copyright SYDNEY, Dec. 27. The yawl, Margaret Rintoul, of 43 feet, was reported early to-day to be leading the 14 other contestant in the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, which started yesterday. She was last sighted near Kiama, about 18 miles offshore, with the sloop Independence, the cutter Waltzing Matilda, and the cutter Gypsy Queen in close attendance.
The Peer Gynt, which is reporting regularly by radio to Sydney, was then five miles behind the leader. The yachts had only a slight offshore breeze to help them and were making about two knots. The Margaret Rintoul earlier reported losing a spinnaker. Thousands of foreshore watchers saw the start of the race yesterday, when the 15 yachts set off on the 640mile race.
