DESPERATE PLIGHT
Cypriots Stranded In Darwin
Rec. 11 p.m.< DARWIN, Dec. 17. The plight of about 60 Cypriots who arrived in Darwin yesterday by charter plane and who have not the money or the means of travelling further in Australia is desperate. The migrants came from Cyprus to Bangkok in a Skymaster air-liner of the Scandinavia Air Systems and were brought on to Darwin by a Bharat Airways plane. The charter called for them to be left at Darwin and the commander of the plane refused to carry them further unless he received a guarantee of £2OOO. After being impounded by the authorities, the plane was released today. Meanwhile the migrants are spending the nights huddled in chairs or lying on the concrete floor of the airport building. Some of the immigrants, including Miss Christina Pieri, who is bound for New Zealand, were able to travel on to Sydney by a British air-liner today.
