NO DOCK LABOUR
Eighty Ships Idle In Melbourne TRIBUNAL’S ORDER DISOBEYED Rec. 11 p.m. MELBOURNE. Dec. 27. Because Melbourne watersiders will not resume work until tomorrow, Lascar seamen unloaded mails and passenger baggage from the liner Streatheden today. Her sailing time for Sydney has been put back 24 hours and some Melbourne cargo may be over-carried. The liner Orion was idle today as were 78 other ships in Melbourne. The Arbitration Court may act against Mr H. Clarke, secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, for making unauthorised statements to union members telling them not to accept Christmas work. Mr Clarke said today: “If anyone is penalised, it should be I. 1 issued circulars telling the men to cease work at mid-day on Friday and to resume on Wednesday, and to be available for urgent work today.” An order to provide a pool of watersiders for urgent work at Christmas was issued last week by the Stevedoring Industry Tribunal. The order was obeyed in other ports. The Stevedoring Industry Commission has the power to suspend watersiders who refused work over the holidays, but no action has yet been taken.
