DOUBLES BETTING

POPULAR INNOVATION PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. The first doubles totalisator to be available on an Auckland city racecourse since the recent changes in the gaming laws was in operation for the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Alexandra Park, Epsom, today. Its success with the betting public was never in doubt from the time the machine opened. The dividend paid out for the winning double, Captain Sandy and Sahara Queen was £B6 9s for £l, or £2l 12s 6d for ss. A record crowd of 34,903 patrons watched the day’s racing, and wagered £200,643 10s on the win and place totalisator, making a record turnover for the club. The attendance showed an increase of over 5000 on the figure for the same day last year, and it also exceeded the previous best attendance at the park. This occurred on the last day of the Australasian trotting championships in February, 1948, when 32.300 were admitted.
