UNITED STATES OVERCOMES PROBLEM OF RAW MATERIALS FOR ITS ATOMIC PROJECTS
New Zealand Press Association—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. WASHINGTON, Dec. 25. The United States Atomic Energy Commission has overcome the once critical problem of raw material supplies for' its atomic projects, Mr Carroll Wilson, the commission’s general manager, said last night. “The uncertainty of two years ago concerning the supply of materials has turned into the assur- ( ance of adequate supplies,” he said. He added that the raw materials section had succeeded in developing processes for exploiting the low grade uranium ores being mined extensively in the Colorado plateau area. The high cost of processing thote ore* had made the United States dependent in the past on the richer raw materials from the Belgian Congo and Canada. Practically all Belgian and Canadian production still came to the United States, but if war now should cut off either or both sources the United States could continue producing atomic bombs with American ores only.
