LICENCE CANCELLED
Intoxicated Driver
Pleading not guilty to a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor vehicle on December 23, Robert James Grave, a poultry farmer, of Ardgowan, was fined £lO and costs (£1 Is), his driver's licence was cancelled, and he was prohibited from obtaining another for six months by Messrs H. C- Jeffery, J.P., and J. Gerrle, J.P., at a sitting of the Oamaru Police Court on Saturday morning. ■ On the application of counsel for the defence (Mr H. J. S. Grater), security for appeal was fixed at £lO, Senior Sergeant D. Wilson, who prosecuted, said that at 5.12 p.m. on December 23 the defendant cut across Traffic Officer G. A. R. Ferguson's car in Humber street and pulled up at the side of the road. The defendant got out of the drivers seat and staggered across to the Railway Station. Traffic Officer Ferguson took him to the Police Station, where he was examined by Dr D. J. Miller who pronounced him moderately intoxicated. The medical statement was very diffuse, Mr Grater said, and the defendant made an endeavour to secure three other doctors, one of whom refused to go to the Police Station. It was quite conceivable that another medical opinion, had it been obtained, might have conflicted with the statement of Dr Miller.
After an adjournment, penalties were Imposed as stated.
