The Minister for Immigration, Mr A. A. Calwell, declared at a meeting at Inverell that no Japanese would enter Australia while he was Minister for Immigration. “No athletic body, local or international, will dissuade me from that policy,” he added. Mr Calwell’s remarks were in reply to a question on a statement made in Tokio by the director of the Japanese Track and Field Association. Dr Kinlchi Asano, that Japan planned to make a large-scale come-back into the world of sport at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956. Dr Asano is reported to have said that Japanese sportsmen are not in the least disturbed at the opposition of Mr Calwell to Jaoanese participation in the Melbourne Games.
