OPEN-CUT MINING
Australia Imports Giant Machines NZPA—Copyright SYDNEY, Nov. 15.
The first of the three giant walking dragline excavators bought from America by the Joint Coal Board is being unloaded to-day. In one bite the excavator can dig 16 tons of earth or rock and dump it 165 feet away. In continuous operation, it is capable of removing 3,500,000 cubic yards of overburden a year. Where the thickness of overburden is five times that of the coal, it will expose 700,000 tons of coal a year. When two similar machines come into operation, this new method of open-cut mining will mean over 2,000,000 tons of coal from the open cuts each year. The machimc. which cost £250,000, takes giant strides over open-cut territory.
