Lower Standards For Australian Athletes In Empire Games Trials

Standards fixed for Australian candidates for the men’s events in the Empire Games at Auckland next year are lower than those for the Australian Olympic Games team last year. Australia can enter a maximum of four competitors in each track and field event and six in the marathon race. Under the system of selection, the Australian selectors will rank atheletes for each event in the order of times they register under recognised control during this season.

The first four ranked will automatically become the team for that event. The main basis of selection will be the Australian championships in Adelaide in January. Standards are: 100 Yards, 9.9 sec; 220 Yards, 21.8 sec; 440 Yards, 49sec; 'BBO Yards, lmin 57sec; Mile. 4min 22sec; Three Miles, 14min 50sec; Six Miles, 31min 45sec; Marathon, 2hr 45min; 120 Yards Hurdles, 14.8 sec; 440 Yards Hurdles, 55sec; Broad Jump, 23ft; Hop, Step and Jump, 47ft; High Jump, 6ft 2in- Pole Vault, 12ft 3in; Shot Putt, 45ft - Discus Throw, 135 ft; Javelin Throw, 175 ft; Hammer Throw, 140 ft. — Reuter, Sydney.
