BEAUMARIS IN FORM

EARLY FAVOURITE FOR DERBY FINE STAYING BACKGROUND Beaumaris, the outsider of the field of six which went to the post In the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham on Monday, recorded his most Important success when he accounted for Gold Script and Golden Spa in a f fast-run race. As a result of his easy win he is being widely discussed as a New Zealand Derby prospect and if he holds his form he should prove the hardest horse to beat. Beaumaris is bred to stay, being by Beau Repaire from Mabel Rose, by Nightmarch from Amyri], by Psychology from Amyrin. by Bezonian from Amyris, by Gold Reef from Balm, by Dunlop from the imported mare Frou Frou. Amyril was the dam of Pensacola, winner of the New Zealand Derby, Canterbury Cup and Harcourt Stakes, while Amyrin left Melissa, the dam of Merial (the dam of Pomade and Trident) and Peter’s Choice. Beaumaris was purchased at the yearling sales by Mr W. Dwyer, of Wanganui, and he was' later passed on to the Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw. Beau Repaire is the sire of many good performers, including Beau le Havre, Lord Mayor, Beau Bijou, Broadwav and Caber Fae. It will therefore not be surprising if Beaumaris goes on to the best handicap class.

In a short career the Beau RSpaire colt has had 14 starts for three wins and five placings for £2705 in stakes. His first success last season was in a division of the Bradley Stakes at the Banks Peninsula meeting in March when he defeated Lady Melville and Vand. On the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting he put up a solid performance to ’ beat Birdman and Caronia in the Autumn Nursery Handicap in lmin 11 l-ssec for the six furlongs. He started off this trern by running a useful sixth in the Selwyn Handicap at the Grand National meeting, following this up with a second to Swayup in the John Grigg Stakes. He then ran second to Helio in the October Handicap at Wingatui and th’e following Saturday he went under narrowly to Swayup in the Dunedin Guineas. He was unplaced in the Walnui Handicap on the first day at Trentham and on Saturday he ran Second to Gold Script in the Wellington Guineas. Most of his races this esason had been over one mile and in all of them he was noticed finishing on in fine style. He lived up to this form when he beat a high-class field in the Stakes on Monday, and it looks as though he mav dominate the three-year-old distance classics later in the season. Jottings General entries for the New Zealand Cup meeting will be taken on Friday. Acceptances for the Winton Jockey Club's spring meeting are due on Monday. 11. N. Wiggins resumed riding at Trentham on Monday after a trip to the United States, and he gave a good exhibition in getting Pierre home in the Pearce Handicap. Brngden went a good race for fourth in the Hokonui Hack Handicap at Gore on Monday and the Salmagundi gelding can be noted as an early hack distance winner. Should Carry On

Raineri lived up to her promising track work when she easily accounted for the second division of the Novice Stakes at Gore on Monday. The Defaulter mare should be seen to advantage over a distance later In the season and she should more than hold her own against the open hacks. Half-sister to Sir Garnish , Oscillate had a - well-deserved win in the Waimea Hack Handicap at Gore on Monday and the half-sister by Man’s Pal to the New Zealand Cup winner, Sir Garnish, can be expected to win again at short notice when the sting is out of the track. She did not race with the best of luck last season and she prejudiced her chances on several occasions by making a slow beginning. She races best when fresh. Erfskay in Form

Eriskay made up for her defeat in the Members’ Handicap on the first day at Gore by winning the President’s Handicap on' Monday narrowly but well from Sir Abbot and Some Sal. It was her first success since she won the Dunedin Centennial Cup in February, 1948. It was a sound trial for the New Zealand Cup next month, and if she holds her form she may be one of the hardest of tire southern candidates to beat. She is now a seven-year-old and she mav not have much more racing in front of her. First Winning Ride

' Royal Scandal gave the Wingatui apprentice, L. Smith, his first success when the combination was successful in the first division of the Novice Stakes at Gore on Monday. Smith, who is apprenticed to A. E. Didham, got Royal Scanda out well and the Revelation gelding led all the way. Royal Scandal is owned by Mr E. R Curtis, who had successes at the week-end with Fille d'Honneur and .Detract. Royal Scandal has come to hand fairly quicklv and he gives the impression that'he will not be out of his class in his future races. In Open Company '

Johnnv Peep won £490 for his success in tile Ruahine Hack Handicap at Trentham on Monday and the. Ruthless gelding will be required to do his future racing in open company as his winning stakes now amount to £7OO. A three-year-old gelding, he is out of Glow Light and he was bought for 700gns bv the Christchurch sportsman, Mr D. McFarlane, for whom he is trained by F. D. Jones. Johnnv Peep is a half-brother to Helio, Mercury Bay (a winner in Australia), and Prudentia. His dam is a half-sister to Lumiere (the dam of Rea Pickle), Romarin, Stately and Joyous. Johnnv Peep should not be out of his depth in open company.
