NEWS OF THE DAY

Smoking In Trolley Buses A question which is likely to be discussed by the Transport Committee of the Dunedin City Council before long is whether smoking will be permitted in the trolley buses when they begin running. The Auckland City Council has decided to impose a ban on smoking in trolley buses there, and it is possible that this procedure may be adopted in Dunedin. Smoking is Eermitted on the buses at present eing operated by the City Transport Department in Dunedin and also on tram cars in specified parts of these vehicles, and smokers will await with interest the decision of the department as to smoking in trolley buses. Land Ballot Held Mr Charles William McCord, of Henley, was the successful applicant in the land ballot conducted by the Dunedin office of the Department of Lands and Survey yesterday for the 130-acre farm on the Berwick-Henley road. The names of seven suitablygraded ex-servicemen went into the ballot box.

Early Strawberries

Claimed to be the first of the season, strawberries were on sale in Christchurch on Thursday. A friiiterer, in whose shop the fruit was showing, said that they came from Heathcote. They were selling at 9s 6d and 7s 6d a punnet according to grade. The same retailer said that, by use of the quickfreeze process, he had had strawberries on sale in his shop this year on all but two days.

Angle Parking A move by the City Traffic Department, which has met with the approval of motorists, has been the adoption of angle parking opposite the railways bus terminal in Cumberland .street, and in Lower High street from the Railway Station to the Early Settlers Building. The effect of the change from parking parallel with the kerb to angle parking has been a considerable*. increase in the number .of vehicles which may be parked in these two areas.

Gift For Corporation The Dunedin City Corporation Transport Department can expect to receive a small gift parcel through the post * within the next few days. An irate motorist told the Daily Times yesterday that one of the tyres of his car had been badly damaged by a sharp piece of tram rail more than three inches long. After removing the jagged sliver of steel from his tyre, the motorist put it carefully aside. “I’ll post it back to the Transport Department with a curt note,’’ he said deliberately.

City Water Supply The concreting of the embankments of the Ross Creek reservoir ended for this year a short time ago, and the reservoir was allowed to refill. .The Daily Times was told yesterday that the city reservoirs were now full to their total capacity of 144,000,000 gallons. A Venturi meter for measuring the demand for water in various parts of Dunedin was shifted recently by the Water Department from a site in Caversham to the Southern reservoir, and is now in operation. It will enable the department to compile data that should be of value to it in the future.

New Cruiser Launch * A 28-foot dabin cruiser which is being built in Invercargill by Mr Ross Mitchell will join the fleet of small craft at Stewart Island about Christmas or early in the New Year. Constructed to plans of a well-known American designer, the launch will be powered by a 95 h,p. marine engine and will be capable of cruising at about/ 15 miles an hour. Full ; sized paper patterns were received from the United States for the construction, which ,has been done mainly in totara. An interesting feature is the framework of Australian hardwood taken from the hulk of an old gravel dredge at the estuary. With sleeping accommodation for four people, the cruiser will be used for pleasure purposes between Bluff and the island.
