LIMIT OF SIX

Bag For Salmon Season

Comments on the limiting of the salmon bag to six fish for the present angling season were made at the meeting of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society on Thursday night. Members were of the opinion that such restrictions might prove disadvantageous to local anglers, who throughout the season might find the river in fishable condition on only a few occasions. It was stated that the northern rivers cleared much faster than the Waitaki and enabled much more fishing to be carried out throughout the season. Mr H. Keen, the ranger, remarked that any angler who secured six fish on the one day should be satisfied with his performance. It was decided that the matter should be kept in view for further consideration. Dr E. E. Butler was in the chair.

Mr Taylor reported that he had received advice from Mr Claringbold that the society’s request for 50 pheasants’ eggs from the Otago Society would be granted, but that the eggs would not be available until the end of November.

Mr J. Keen reported that, provided conditions were favourable, a “ shag drive ” would be held in the Waitaki River on Sunday. He added that members of the Waimate Society would also be active on that day to shoot the shags from the north side of the river. A request for information regarding the liberation and spread of chukor was received. and it was left to the Game Committee to hand any information available on to the inquirers.
