MORE FIRES

SCRUB AND GORSE AREAS SIGNAL HILL AND ROSLYN Great columns of smoke and long tongues of flame were yesterday in evidence on the hills surrounding Dunedin foi' the third day in succession, when two further large gorse and scrub fires broke out—one at Roslyn and the other at Signal Hill. Though nowhere near as extensive as the fire which raged at Flagstaff at the. week-end, yesterday’s outbreaks burned furiously for more than an hour each and scorched considerable areas of land. In neither case was there any danger to property, but city fire brigade machines stood by as a precautionary measure. The fire at Signal Hill began on the west side of the road shortly after noon. When the wind freshened and began spreading the flames down the hill in the direction of the houses, a call was made to the City Fire Brigade, and a machine arrived on the scene about 1 o’clock. The blaze, however, was confined to the one area, and the brigade was able to depart not long after an hour’s vigil. While this blaze was dying, out another flared up on the face of the hill on the west side of Kenmuir road. Roslyn, behind the woollen mills, and burned out a fairly extensive area of land, until brought under control. Machines from the Roslyn and Central lire Brigades were summoned about 2.30 p.m., and attended the fire for about an hour. Although the blaze was spectacular, there was at no time any risk of danger to dwellings.
