RUGBY NORTH AND SOUTH

Sir,—One reads in your sports column and hears in the street statements that North Island Rugby is not very strong, this assumption being based on performances by Manawatu and Waikato m Otago. I would like you to put things in their true perspective. The three South Island teams visiting Auckland have had decisive defeats—Canterbury 21—3 (6 tries to 1): Southland 21—16 (5 tries to 3); South Canterbury 39—nil (8 tries). Based on a similar inference ne could conclude that South Island Rugby is of poor standard. Would it not be more fitting to say that the excellence of both Otago and Auckland places other teams in the world of mediocrity?—l am. e t c McG. L. Smith.
