BURNS SONGS

CHARACTER PORTRAYAL DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS “ I would warn competitors against over-portraying the character of a song at the expense of purity of tone, said Mr W. Hutchens (Christchurch), the vocal adjudicator, at the conclusion of the second day of the Dunedin Competitions Society’s annual festival at the Concert Chamber last night.' He was referring to the open Burns song section, and added that there were some lovely voices in the section, which he hoped would not depart from the principles of voice production to put over the humorous element of a' song. When a voice was misproduced it jarred on the ears of a musician. “More humorous poems are needed: it is time the old ones were forgotten,’’ said Miss P. Torpy (Hamilton), the elocution judge, commenting on the humorous recitation section for 12 and under 14 years. The winner of the men’s recitation section, O. Hymen (Gore) was, however, outstanding. He gained the highest marks yet given in these classes. There were some promising players in the children’s piano solo sections, said Mr C. L. Martin, the instrumental judge. They had been well grounded. He also remarked upon the large audiences the sections had attracted. It showed an improved public interest in these classes. As the chief piano solo, for the Moller Trophy, is one of the most coveted, it has been decided that more justice would be done to competitors if it were held in the Concert Cham ber. It will now be held on September 1. Yesterday’s results were:— INSTRUMENTAL Plano Solo, under 10 years. Ten enTaylor, 85} points, 1; M. Oliver, 85 points, 2; A. Rutledge, 74 points, 3. Commended: B.
