PLENTY OF SNOW

QUEENSTOWN CONDITIONS SKATERS LESS FORTUNATE “ Conditions could not be better,” said a Queenstown resident yesterday, describing the Coronet Peak snowfields. There had been a fall last Friday, and a week of perfect weather had followed. A big crowd was at Queenstown to enjoy the excellent skiing conditions, he said, but the main crowds were expected about August 20. The Wigley Cup would be held on that day and the university and school vacations would be in progress. There was a good fall of snow at Queenstown a month ago,, but a gale blew a lot of it away. At the present time, the three ski tows are operating, the snow at the two top tows being in excellent condition. The South Island Championships will be held at Queenstown early in September, when contests will also be held against the Australians. Skating enthusiasts at Alexandra and Ranfurly have not enjoyed such favourable conditions, although quite a lot of curling and some skating has been held at Naseby. The curling has been held on the Mount Ida curling i dam. At the present time prospects do not appear bright for the bonspiel. Alexandra people have had very little skating this season and Ranfurly people have had none. Hard frosts have been experienced at nights, which have been followed by sunny days- 1 - hot-enough to thaw the ice. Alexandra residents say that it is unusual to have a season without any skating.
