Promising Youngsters In Work At Wingatui

There are a large number of two-year-olds in work at Wingatui at present, the most forward of whom include D. J. McDonald’s filly by Royal Chief from Half Note, a good-class sprinter who has left other good winners in Irish Note, Lyndall, and Blank Cheque. McDonald also has two geldings in work, one by Royal Chief from Last Pal and the other by Haughty Winner from Whack. The Ruthless colt, Brutus, from J. W. Pankhurst’s stables, is to race in the two-year-old parade at Riccarton to-morrow, and it will be interesting to see how he fares aganist his northern opponents. He is easily the most forward youngster at Wingatui, and if all goes well with him he should develop into a good classic winner. F. T. Anning has a promising-looking youngster by Defaulter from Lady Paigie. a half-sister'to Peony Rose, Madam Cherry (the dam of Merry Lancer), Filibeg, Sally Lunn, and Pimento. He looks as though he will take some time before he is seen at his best, although he will probably be started in the McLean Stakes. Anning aso has two likely-looking two-year-olds by Finis, one being from Golden Vision (the dam of Finance), and the other being from Trellis (the dam of Espalier).

Royal Sat at Wingatui Royal Sal. who failed to win a race when trained at Oamaru by G. A. Patterson last season, is a recent addition to E. E. Hunt's team. The Salmagundi mare is the type to do well around the country meetings. Jumping Recruit R. Heasley has taken over Victory Star to be educated as a jumper. Victory Star is a full-brother to an outstanding jumper in Bright Fox and a half-brother to Observatory, Pola, and Lady Cometary, being by Foxbridge from Cometary. Victory Star is the type to ma"ke good in this department. Milly Mandy Retired Milly Mandy. a five-year-old mare by Royal Chief from Spearette, has been retired to the stud. When trained at Wingatui by D. J. McDonald she showed great promise, but she failed to run on in her races. She should make a valuable orood mare. R. Heasley’s Team Among the active members of R. Heasley’s team are Nullah’s Pride, a recent addition from the North Island, Master Galloway, a two-year-old brother to Greer Galloway, Tweedside, and Dymondy, who has shown some promise as a jumper in ;he little schooling he has done. Heasley expects to race some of his team at the Otago Hunt meeting next month. Back in Work The Wingatui trainer T. A. McLeod has taken up Lord Dundonald again. He has built up well during his enforced spell, and if he remains sound he should come into his own while the tracks are easy Grand Pal, who was recently taken over by McLeod, has gone amiss, and he has been blistered and turned out. The trouble seems to be seated in an old injury, and it may be some time before the Man’s Pal gelding is back on the tracki To Race on Third Day F. T. Anning brought Social News home from Riccarton after the first day of the Grand National meeting, but she will be on hand tor the third day. She has taken no harm from her hard race in the second division of the Cashmere Plate, and she has held her condition well. Her stablemate, Flying Trixie, is having a short letup, and she will race at the Otago Hunt meeting next month. Both these • horses should break their maiden status in the near future.
