PERSONAL

Judge Ongley, of the Compensation Court, will leave Dunedin to-day for Christchurch. He has been presiding over sittings of the court at Dunedin,

“THE CARTOON CASE” • Sir, —“ Interested ” may be assured that the " incidents ” did not occur only In October. They happened over a long period, and they did not end nine months ago. He is seeking to put a good face on ■ a very unpleasant series of incidents. It is just as absurd to say the City Council could have done anything about the matter while it was happening as it is to suggest they contemplated victimisation against “ fit ana proper" persons when the business has not even been discussed. It is nonsense to say it does not affect the Transport Department. It affects it from the new-est-joined employee to the City Council itself. The only statement of - “ Interested ” that is correct is that the new acting manager has the goodwill of everybody, but as the incidents occurred before he took over, he should be dismissed from the whole unpleasant affair. Your other correspondent accuses the Transport Department of promoting in* ■■ dustrial strife, but as already pointed out. he is getting ahead of himself. The " philosophy" he mentions is presumably that of Communism, and if that precious creed has anything to do with the "Cartoon Case,” then I would say it cannot be “abased” too much. It is stated that the executive has the backing of the vast majority of tramwaymen. Is that suggested so far as union matters are concerned only, or does it cover the . affair of the “ Cartoon Case,” too? If so there are many tramwaymen who will strongly repudiate any suggestion of participaton in the whole painful and bitterly childish affair.—l am, etc._ worker.

Sir,—Everyone, with the exception of rabid Communists and fellow travellers, knows it is impossible to "abase the poisonous “ philosophy " of Communism. And characterising the City Council as promoters of industrial strife is ratner previous, as all that has happened is that one councillor has asked a question. Continuing the strife argument, it. would seem the boot is on the other foot. Some time ago we had the mystenous invitation episode of Mr Vic Wilcox being invited to address tramwaymen. It would seem the tramsheds is a real home from home for the “ Commos —or is it? “ Interested " is trying to gloss over a very unsavoury: episode., The incidents did not occur only nine months ago. they spread over a long period, well up to the court case. The " vast" majority of tramwaymen may have elected the executive, but do they acquiesce in the miserable persecution, annoyances and more serious things that occurred? As to victimisaby the council, when they have not even discussed it—that Is nonsense. I dm* etc.. Common Sense*
