THE REFERENDUM

Sir,—Last week the people of New Zealand decided that compulsory military training was the way to peace. No doubt this scheme may bring world peace, but the true and only definite way to peace is through a world church. There is yet no church perfect to the extent of dominating another. But if all churches pull together, there will grow out of this effort a new and perfect church. If we want peace we must start with ourselves and correct our own faults, and if this is not done it is hopeless to think of peace. With our Lord’s help, these will be corrected and we will be on our way to peace.—l am. etc., Milton World Peace

Sir,—After 23 centuries of searching, " Diogenes ” has found in your correspondence column that which he has been seeking—an honest writer. It is dazzling to find one’s modest contribution suddenly floodlit by the cynic’s famous lantern. If ” Diogenes ” will share his light, I shall gladly accompany him on a further quest for something we badly need and sadly lack. Let us seek together political leadership that ts sufficiently wise to realise that, In this atomic age, national patriotism is not enough, that is sufficiently honest to distinguish between enlightenment and propaganda, that is sufficiently courageous to demote the generals and to promote the scientists, the teachers and the preachers.—l am, etc., Disabled Volunteer.
