SAPLENDID RELATIONS

EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES PA WELLINGTON, June 1.

, The splendid relationship existing between employer and staff in Wellington was cojnmented on by the president of the Wellington. Employers’ Association. Mr Percy Coyle, at to-day’s annual meeting of the association. Mr Coyle contrasted this with “the trend in some areas and quarters. and particularly in • some labour circles, towards control of the em ployees by professional officials whose main- desires are to destroy that friendly relationship between tne employers and their employees.” If industry were to progress, he said, the employers and employees who had a primary interest ip qommon must pull together, as an enterprise was a productive organism that , was the result of a harmonious combination of work and capital'. ' Reviewing New Zealand’s economic situation, Mr Coyle said the increase in the civilian labour force for the year' ended October, 1948, was higher than had been expected. Apart from the natural increase, immigration and the reduction of the armed services this was accounted for partly, he said by the increase in juvenile employment. The increase in juveniles in industry did not result from fewer attending schools and universities, bui from a higher, proportion of young persons, especially young women, taking up work after leaving school Though the - number of vacancies in secondary industries had-fallen substantially, the labour shortage for all secondary industries remained acute, he said.
