APPOINTMENT DEFERRED

FULL-TIME VICE-CHANCELLOR .OF UNIVERSITY AUTHORISED SALARY TOO LOW PA WELLINGTON, June 1. The appointment of a full-time Vicechancellor of the University of New Zealand has been deferred, because the Government will not agree to the payment of a salary of £2OOO a year. This decision was made at a recent special meeting in committee of the Senate. The Senate passed the following resolution: “That in view of the fact that the Minister of Stabilisation, Mr Nordmeyer, has 'declined to authorise a salary of £2OOO yearly for a fulltime Vice-chancellorship of the University, the Senate do not proceed with an appointment on the present applications, and that the applicants be informed accordingly.” The present Vice-chancellor is Professor I. A. Gordon, professor of English at Victoria University College, Wellington. His term of office expires in January. The next meeting of the Senate will be held in August, when an appointment will again be discussed.
