LONG SERVICE
Bandsman Honoured Service given to bands in Oamaru by Mr W. L. Burns over a period of 38 years was recognised at the annual meeting of the Oamaru Garrison Band on Tuesday night, when a presentation of a fireside chair was made to him by the, Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, on' behalf of the band members. „ - In making the presentation, Mr Cooney said that any band work undertaken by the guest was carried through with enthusiasm. Not only the band, but the whole community, owed him a debt ot gratitude. , , Mr Bums put his whole heart and into the band and his work throughout the years had been greatly appreciated, said Mr W. Green. He had held the office as secretary of the Municipal Band, and his work as a bandsman had been second to none, . , „ Mr T. F. Ovens said the band would go a long »way before it found another member who had worked so willingly in ltS Mr n A re Nuttall said that all were sorry that the time had arrived when Mr Burns had to give up active participation in the work of the band. In appreciation of his services he had been elected an honorary life member, a distinction acC Messrs W. R. F.’Naylor, J. Jackman G. McLeod and K. Thorby were others who paid tributes to the guest s services, and also to Mrs Burns, for allowing Mr Burns to give so freely of his time to the band."
