NUMEROUS CALLS

BAND’S FULL YEAR Calls had been numerous, and the band had risen to every occasion and given the community a service which otherwise would be missed, said the Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, at the annual meeting of the Oamaru Garrison Band on Tuesday night. He had always realised the debt the community owed to the band. It was unfortunate that a site had not been obtained for the building of a bandroom, but he hoped one would become available in the near future so that a modern, attractive bandroom could be provided. The band was indebted to its officers — the secretary, Mr Naylor, for his untiring efforts; the conductor, Mr Ovens, who had given yeoman service over a long number of years; and the chairman, Mr Nuttall, who was always a driving force, Mr Cooney said. “ I heartily congratulate the band on having experienced a full year, and on behalf of the citizens I thank you for giving so freely of your ability and time to the community,” he concluded. , . . The financial statement showed the band to be in a sound position, said the treasurer, Mr H. Hay, but it did not justify any member in relaxing, as in the future the band would be faced with heavy expenditure such as the building of a hall and the purchase of a site, instruments, etc. Mr Cooney congratulated the band on its sound financial position, stating that the expenses, which totalled £144 15s 9d, showed that the funds were capably handled. J , , The annual report which was adopted, stated that during the past year members had been called upon on 161 occasions. The active membership had again been built up to 32, and for this gratitude was expressed to the conductor, Mr T. F. Ovens, for his valued coaching of juniors. A decision of moment during the, year was to send a consignment of foodstuffs to a band in England, resulting in three sizeable cases being fprwarded to the City of Coventry Band.
