SAIEDA SUCCESSFUL

South Canterbury Meeting Concluded v ______ CLOISTER WINS STEEPLES Ridden by C. M. Cassidy, Saieda had his first success in open company at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, when he won the principal event on the card easily from Bay Fort, who just beat Thornbridge. Fortune’s Smile and Lord Dundonald were last to leave and flying Control was first out from Saieda, Bay Fort, Kirkella, and Ned Kelly. As they galloped past the four, New Kelly was second to Flying Control, and then came Bay Fort, Saieda, Pandemonium and Kirkella. Eriskay was well back, with Fortune’s Smile and Responsive last. Thornbridge and Lord Dundonald were moving up on the bend, but the leaders into the straight were Flying Control and Ned Kelly from Bay Fort and Saieda. Kirkella and Pandemonium ran wide. Bay Fort was in front a furlong from home but Saieda headed him off and won by two lengths, Bay Fort holding off late challenges from Thornbridge, who was checked on the home turn, and Lord Dundonald. Ned Kelly, Flying Control, and Eriskay were next.

The weather was overcast and the track was in good order. The tote handled £32,198 10s, compared with £34,073. The total for the meeting was £68,907, compared with £69,979 10s last year.

The details are as follows: PUKAKI HURDLES, Of £225. One mile and a-half.

Scarf, Troytown, Cloister and Glad Fox. Ring Scarf and Knight Crusader did not survive the brush fence at the three, and Penny Coin and Kassai went out at the stand double. Cloister took the lead at the stand double, and led down the back straight from Glad Fox, Maize and Troytown. The brush near the seven furlongs and a-half eliminated Dark Game. With less than five furlongs to run Glad Fox joined Cloister, and they raced together over the last fence, but Cloister shook Glad Fox off, and Baffling came home well to beat Troytown for third. Tamerlane and Gambling Site were the only others to finish. Maize broke a bone in,his leg and was destroyed fairlie Handicap Bonny Royal, Newspaper, and Lady Christine prejudiced their chances by beginning slowly and Whitley went Out fast to be the early leader from Bambalina, Lorna Leigh. Vitamin, and Fonso. There was little alteration as the field galloped to the home turn, where General Argosy was moving up. Into the straight it was still Whitley from Bambalina. Newpaper, Vitamin, Fonso, Lorna Leigh, Triumphal, and .General Argosy. Bambalina headed Whitley off and appeared to win with something in hand from Whitley, who was followed home by Vitamin, Newspaper, Lorna Leigh, and Triumphal. WINCHESTER TROT Fanciful finished fast to beat Pretty Dillon and Final Return in a very close finish in the Winchester Trot. When the field settled down Hendon. Clever Jack, Fulgent, Pretty Dillon and lona Hall were the most prominent. Stratosphere put in a run down the back to join Hendon and Final Return in the lead, with Fulgent, Joygiver, Pretty Dillon and Centenary Boy also in the call. Pretty Dillon was first into the straight from Final Return, and Centenary Boy, with Fanciful coming through very fast. Pretty Dillon and Final Return were fighting it out when Fanciful swooped on them and just got there. The order after the placed lot was Centenary Boy, Fulgent and Sir Leonard. TEMUKA HACK HANDICAP The fir® event was run in a fading light. Sky High was the first to break the line and was never headed. He was followed out of the barrier by Advent, Great Chum. Military Chief. Show Boy. and Watchword. Swift Action moved up fast running down the back and led .round the home turn with Sky High from Advent, Lights On, Military Chief, Zarcon, and Watchword Military Chief challenged Sky High in the straight, but was beaten by half a length and Lights On was a head away. Advent and Terminate were next. D. Amey, the rider of Maize in the Craigmore Steeples, and A. J. Williams, the rider of Dark Game, were taken to hospital suffering from slight concussion, and R.W. Shaw broke a 'collarbone when Ringscarf fell. In the Pukaki Hurdles D. Hinton dislocated his collarbone when his mount, Mount Nimrod, fell.
