FIERCE BLAZE

OLD BUILDING GUTTED PA NAPIER, May 28. A fierce blaze, accompanied by combustion of chemicals, gutted an old two story wooden building in Herschell street, Napier, late last night. The fire had been burning for some time when the alarm was given by the night watchman and four engines were called out. After a battle of an hour and a-half in which seven powerful leads were used and thousands of gallons of water were poured into the building, the fire was brought under control and prevented from spreading to other buildings in the block including the courthouse, the borough council chambers and the museum. The premises were owned by the borough council and were occupied by Mr H. H. Dewes, a public accountant, and an electroplating firm, R. P. Products, Ltd. R. P. Products lost the whole of their plant, which was insured for £2500 but was probably worth more, but Mr Dewes was able to save some of his records. The building was insured.
