WOMEN’S MATCHES

IMPRESSIVE DISPLAYS KINGS WELL EXTENDED The unbroken succession of fine weather was maintained on SaturdajK when once again the women’s hockey matches were played on dry grounds and without any wind. After the vacations, a full programme of matches was carried out, including morning games and the full use of the grounds in the afternqon. University A, Otago and Kings registered victories in the senior grade, whilst a very interesting competition match in the senior B Grade between the first elevens of Columba College and Otago Girls’ High School resulted in a narrow victory for the former by one goal to nil. The Senior A Grade results were:— University A 4, Momona 2. Kings 0, Training College 3. ■ Otago 5, University B 1. Taierl, a bye. A CLOSE GAME University A and Momona provided one of the best of women’s hockey seen this season. 1 There was good defence on both sides and the forwards took turns on attack. A weakness which is only too obvious in senior Women's hockey this season was apparent in that both sets of forwards were inclined to hit too hard when in possession of the ball instead of relying on the short passing game. It was a very even game for the first half and the score at half dime was 2—all. In the second half the University forwards set up a very strong attack and found the weaknesses in the Momona defence. Momona was lucky to clear from a penalty bully. The form shown by some of the players in this match augurs well for Otago's chances of fielding a good representative team this season. The University forward line worked smoothly, whilst ’the , defence was strengthened by the return of N. Gourley, the New Zealand representative player,. at left-half. For Momona the two outstanding players were J. McLaren at centre half and D. Stinson at full-back. Goals were scored for University by E. Berridge (3) and J. Howie (1), whilst C. Middleton and T. Rowe netted for Momona. The umpires were Mrs Garrett and Mr W. McLeod.

KINGS? EXTENDED The Training College team, playing its first match after an interval of three weeks and only Its second competition match for the season, offered a good resistance to Kings .'in* a match that might easily have lowered the colours of . the present holders of the senior cup. For the first half the game was very scrappy, with the College players obviously out of touch and the Kings team on the attack for most of the time. Infringements on both sides were too frequent and the College team gave much away by “sticks" and by obstruction. After Kings’ initial advantage, however, which resulted in a goal scored by B. Hendry following up an attacking movement, the College team rallied and tested the Kings defence by several determined efforts. Combination in the forwards was lacking, however, and the solid defence and clever play of E. Slackie and P. Hendry for Kings was too strong The first score for College came from a splendid sola effort by P. Malone on the left wing. Shortly afterwards J. Dale put Training College in the lead, but the advantage was short lived and V. Meek evened the score by a neat shot from a melee and front of the goal. D. Wood, who played well throughout, shortly afterwards put Kings in the lead. The half time score was 3—2 in favour of Kings. In the second half the standard oi play improved- Prominent for Kings were E. Brownlie on the left wing and V Meek at right inner. For Training College V. Quigley in goal made some > excellent saves and P- Mills at full-back displayed good judgment. The most consistent 'player for the students was B. Sutton, formerly of Wanganui, at centre half. V. Meek increased Kings lead shortly after the interval, but the College team played well to reduce the lead by determined efforts by P. Foppelwell, J. Smith and E. Luke. From one of these J. D The SC urnp i res were Mrs Sonntag and Miss T. Sew Hoy. OTAGO RECORDS FIRST VICTORY In the early game at the Oval, University B did not live up to previous promise, although some of % forwards played very nice hockey. The Otago team made several experiments in its combination, C. McDonald Pl a yj, n S f° r a time at centre-forward, and I. Erridge at full-back. The game was not very insDiring, far too many mistakes being made by both teams. The superiority of the Otago team was not evident umii the second half. The half time score was 2—l in favour of Otago, but in the second half three more goals were scored. For University B, P: Woods, in goal, S. Adams at left-inner, and N. Wilson on the left wing were conspicuous. For Otago, l. Erridge played an outstanding game in the second half at centre-forward whilst C. McDonald, at full-back, E. Puddy, on the right wing, and D. Hore at centrehalf contributed largely to the success of their team. Goals Were scored for Otago by I. Erridge (3) and E. Huntley (2). whilst N. Wilson netted for University. The umpires were Miss T. Sew Hoy and Mr W. McLeod. LOWER GRADES Senior B Grade.—Columba College A 1. OGHS A nil: Wesley 9. St. Hilda’s A nil: Kings B 4, Momona B 2. Intermediate A Grade.—Momona C 2. Columba College B 1.
